The inaugural Cricket Art Prize exhibition opens at Harrup Park

First there were test matches . Then one-day internationals. Then day-night matches. Then Twenty20.
Now we have Cricket Art like Mackay has never seen before.
The inaugural $20 000 Cricket Art Prize exhibition was officially opened at Hurrup Park Country Club last night as a testament to the game and sport.
The exhibition arrived in Mackay after being displayed at the Sydney Cricket Ground and is to be exhibited for five weeks at Hurrup Park.
The exhibition includes 32 selected paintings drawn from 232 entries by artists from all over Australia and New Zealand with works that depict life in and around the game and sport of cricket in settings of backyard cricket, beach cricket, social cricket, local club cricket, exhibition co-ordinator Derik Zillich said.
The new national arts prize has been underwritten by Kevin Maloney, the founder and chairman of The MAC Services Group Limited (The MAC).
The MAC is a leading provider of remote-area accommodation services in Australia who have a significant presence in the Bowen Basin with accommodation villages in Coppabella, Dysart, Middlemount, Moranbah and Nebo.
“I am a great believer in developing innovative ideas and I see the Cricket Art Prize as a wonderful way to showcase cricket through the arts medium,” he said.
“The values inherent in sportsmanship bring great benefit to our whole community and I’m very pleased to be able to share this exhibition with the Mackay community.
“I encourage everyone to some along and see the artworks and enjoy this unique opportunity which celebrates a national pastime through this art exhibition.”
