Historical and Cultural Murals
The MAC’s Villages offer a unique entertainment for guests and visitors with huge murals adorning fences, buildings and panels to give an exciting illustration of Australia’s rich history and culture.
The MAC Nebo Village's murals extend over 210 metres, depicting significant historical Australian events, and the people of our landscape. Murals as large as 60m long portray vividly coloured stories.
Current murals include:
- The First Fleet – Buried alive series
- John Henry Mills – The travelling photographer
- Mt Britton in the late 1880’s – Mt Britton at the height of the local gold mining boom
- Traversing the frontier – An extract from the life of a gold miner travelling through the frontier
- The Billy Cart – Taken from a photograph of Cyril Mills riding in a billy cart
- Sir Sidney Kidman and the thrill of bringing in the herd – depicting a number of scenes from the life of a drover
- A replica of the Edith Mary gold mine – a classic mining scene of the 1880’s (Artists commissioned for this mural – Fay Rapmund and Joan McHugh)
- Australian Men and Women at War – depicting Australian experiences during the war, i.e. mateship, camaraderie, patriotism and loyalty
A short drive away, The MAC's Coppabella Village displays more examples of the Australian inspired works of Artist in Residence, David Sheffield. His piece 'A Vision of Australia in 3D' includes landscape icons painted on a 25m x 8m shed – making it one of the largest murals in Australia. An amazing artistic tribute, the viewer will instantly recognise many landmarks such as The 12 Apostles in Victoria and Uluru in the Northern Territory.
'Coppabella Under Water' has transformed two five metre high, 35m round tanks into a painting of underwater finesse. Tank one features The Great Barrier Reef and tank two is based on the smash hit movie 'Happy Feet'. Sit back and watch as the underwater spectacular transforms into a sea of magic at night. The murals form a very special and unique part of Coppabella Village.
The MAC Middlemount takes a step back into the Dreamtime with the development of a colourful 12 x 9 metre mural surrounds the outskirts of the Village. This mural is 120 metres long and creates paintings of nearly 30 Dreamtime stories.
The inspiration behind the murals comes from the late artist Ainslie Roberts who painted a series of paintings based on his interpretation of Aboriginal Dreamtime stories in the early to mid 1960’s. These stories were collected from all around Australia by his close friend and travelling partner Charles Pearcy Mountford on their trips throughout south and central Australia in the mid 1950’s
